Petition

I have put a petition on the PM’s e-petition website regarding The Queens Silver and Golden Jubilee Medals.

Basically I am asking the PM to:

Allow retired members of HM Forces and Emergency Services who served for a period of 5 years during the Reign of HM the Queen to be allowed to purchase and wear with honour and pride either the Queens Silver or Golden Jubilee Medal.

Please read full petition here http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/silvergold/

It as the injustice of HM Forces and Emergency Services who didn’t receive one or both needs to be rectified.

If you agree please spread the word as the more who sign the petition the better chance there will be of the government acting on this matter.

Best regards

Firefighters Helmet Transfers Required, by Andy Lloyd

I have the unusual hobby of collecting the small transfer type badges that fire brigades have worn upon their helmets for many years.  I did have an interest in these items many years ago as a teenager but gave away my collection due to my brigade interest taking a different direction.  Around five years ago my interest was ‘re-ignited’, please excuse the pun, whilst attempting to restore a cork helmet and subsequently applying a replacement transfer.  This had been my only contact with transfer badges as I had swapped British helmets with enthusiasts in North America in exchange for examples from their country, several of which went to fire museums in the UK.

My collection, as it stands today, is categorised into local authority, military, aviation, Irish, commonwealth and anything else which takes my fancy! Age wise I have examples ranging from a pre-war London Fire Brigade to some of the more current fire and rescue services.

Styles and methods of application have varied throughout the years.  Early examples were of the ‘varnish’ or ‘gold-size’ type where the transfer itself had to be brushed with a quick drying varnish and left until it was near dry before application.  It proved, and still proves, to be an art-form/knack to get it just right.  Needless to say that if I only have one example of an old varnish type, I rarely try applying it just in case I ruin it!

The next major type was the so called ‘water-slide’ by which the transfer is immersed in preferably warm water making it separate and slide upon its backing paper and allowing it to be slid onto the helmets surface.

More of an up-to-date type was named the ‘kwik-fix’.  The transfer was sandwiched between two pieces of special paper.  By removing one side of the backing paper it exposed the adhesive side of the transfer which allowed it to be stuck down on to the helmets surface.  Once rubbed down the remaining backing paper could be removed to expose the transfer in all its glory.

Most, if not all, current brigades now use a sticker type helmet insignia of the simple ‘peel-and-stick’ type as used in a multitude of non brigade applications.  They prove to be a lot easier to apply but not so interesting as the older methods!

My display has progressed to the stage where I am now searching for variations of the examples I already have.  If any readers/surfers have spare transfers they would like to pass-on I will gladly give them a good home.  I would be more than prepared to pay for any costs involved, or as an alternative I would be glad to make a donation to a charity of their choice.  I also have some duplicate transfers I would be more than willing to send as ‘swaps’ or to help start of someone else’s collection who may have an interest.

The Northamptonshire Fire & Rescue Service Chaplain has requested that it be known should any retired Fire Service family require her services she is available.

A Special request received from the Ukraine

The Board of the organisation LELEKA has prepared a new project "Clean air" the main aim of which is organising recuperative trips for children. They hope you will help them to find British firemen’s families that are ready to host the Ukrainian children from Ukrainian firemen’s families for Christmas, give them an opportunity to breath clean air and to eat fresh, free from radiation food. They also sometimes hold fund-raising poker games between interested members to raise money for their projects and to foster camaraderie. It would be a great opportunity to meet your culture and traditions as well.

Anyone who can help should write to the LELEKA Fund at: P.O.Box 328,Kiev-2, 02OO2, Ukraine.
